An Unkindness is a creature of legend that is believed to haunt battlefields, take the souls of dying warriors to their final fate, or portend the end of a person’s life in battle. They are often depicted as beautiful women with a dangerous and feral aspect to them, hair made of raven feathers, patches of scaled skin like a raven’s legs framing their faces, and giant raven wings sprouting from their backs. Accounts vary on just how thoroughly raven-like these beings are, but they are always armed and armored, usually with golden or silvery armor and weapons. Swarms of ravens often accompany an unkindness, which earns large groups of ravens their namesake.
Despite no corpses having been found or sightings verified, the Unkindness is the most feared creature in any bestiary published in the Four Great Nations, more so even than trolls, banshees, or dullahan. The Unkindness is such a terrifying image because in all instances it is a bringer of certain death and untimely fate. When scolding their children, nobody would be foolish enough to warn their children that an Unkindness will take them for misbehaving, lest they summon one of the raven women to do just that at some later year.
